In India, Paperman an organization has launched a mobile app which can be used by people to directly connect them to a local ragman and sell their waste with the objective of accelerating recycling in India.

Citizengage is another organization in India helping restaurants and food chains to collect their waste and provides database modules to the staff on how to segregate waste.

Plastic for change is the first recycling organization certified by the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO). This organization connects waste picker to the global market, help companies to shift to high quality recycled plastic for packing their products.

There are other organizations as well such as, Nano E-waste, Vital waste, Gem Enviro Management, Saahas Zero Waste which all are contributing to make India a better place in terms of better recycling methods.

The ongoing crisis of pandemics has brought our attention to the environment that how important it is to maintain the ecological balance.

The government of India has introduced some policies, which will help organizations, institutes, stakeholders, businesses to better understand how to Recycle, reuse, reduce their products in an ecological manner.

Materials Industry

National steel policy 2017 introduced by the ministry of steel aims to develop a globally competitive steel industry by creating 300 million tons per annum (TPA) steel production capacity by 2030 with the contribution of 35%- 40% from EAF/IF routes. Scrape-based raw material steel-making technologies have been envisaged as one of the important options to reduce GHG emission intensity. This shall contribute to 6Rs i.e.: reduce, reuse, recycle, recover, redesign and remanufacture to avoid any adverse impact on the environment.

The ministry of environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Federation of India chambers of commerce and Industry (FICCI), UN Environment Program collaboratively encourage and bring awareness among the citizens of India. This two-month-long awareness campaign will comprise several events. One which is India plastic Challenge- Hackathon 2021, which will call upon intuitions, start-up, entrepreneurs to develop innovative ways to alleviate plastic pollution and promote alternative for single-use plastic.

With the vision of our Prime Minister Narendra Modi to eliminate single-use plastic by 2022.

Textile Industry

The gesticulation by some big brands worldwide encourages recycling and reuse.

Nike has launched a scheme called “Zero-to Zero”. In this scheme, customers can drop off their old athletic sneakers’ shoes of any brand in any condition at Nike stores in the US and Europe. This scheme was to bring awareness about reuse and recycle.

Walkes the snacks brand has launched its own crips packet recycling scheme. In this, the company accepts empty crips packets of any brand which can be drop at the collection center. After cleaning this packet is then shredded and used to make other plastic products. In 2018, the company has partnered with TerraCycle to make it easier to recycle and the impact on the environment.

Wrap launched a 1-million-pound grant to increase the recycling business in England. The target was to achieve a 55% recycling rate by 2025 for Nonhouse Municipal waste.

The leading brand H&M come up with a scheme for recycling. At any H&M store, you can drop off your old collection of clothes in any condition and ask for the Garment collection box and get an H&M voucher in return.

Zara has a similar scheme Drop your old clothes at only the selected store and get a 10% discount. Levis run the same scheme to drop unwanted clean clothes at their denim retailer store and get a 10% discount voucher at full-priced clothing in the store.
Cosmetic companies are also taking initiatives and promoting recycling methods in the cosmetic industry. There are plenty of cosmetic brands promoting recycling such as MAC and Garnier.

All these efforts taken by the governments, organizations, recycling institutions, companies can be effective only when we all as a citizen come together to take the responsibility, so from next time before dumping think twice about Recycling, Reuse, Repeat.
